Battle of Lexington and Concord,1775
On April 19, 1775, the first battle of the American Revolution began. It took place in Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay, USA. The British failed to conduct a successful strike on the Americans. Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith led a strike to capture and destroy the oppositions military supplies. It was a successful Colonial victory. |
Battle of Bunker Hill - June 17, 1775
It was one of the most important Colonial victories for the USA. The Colonists decided to take action, but both sides realized it would take more than a quick decisive battle to decide the outcome. The British led to victory. William Prescot with about 1200 militia, instructed fortifications, and the first two assaults were repulsed by Colonial Militia. On the third assault, they ran out of ammunition. |
Battle of Quebec – December 1775
Quebec was captured by American Colonial forces. Guy Carlton, a British troop leader, could not get outside help because the St. Lawrence river was frozen. Because of this, he stayed with small numbers. The British won and ended British control of Canada's threat. The losses for America were over 500 lives and the British losses were a mere 20 people. |
Battle of Saratoga – October 1777
Johnny Burgoyne lead a British Army into New York and New England. The British were blind-sided and lost two battles near Saratoga county. The British surrendered 6200 men. This news helped convince France to enter the war on the American side. |
Battle of Rhode Island – August 1778
Also known as the battle capital of Quaker Hill and the Siege of Newport. The British won a strategic victory. Continental army and militia forces, under general John Sullivan, went north after abandoning their siege of Newport. The battle ended inconclusively, but the Continental forces afterward, withdrew to the mainland, leaving Aquidneck Island in British hands. Strangely, fifty Americans and twelve Englishman went missing during and after the battle. |
Battle of Charleston – May 1780
This was the worst American defeat of the entire Revolution. On May 12, General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered his army of 5500 men. As well, he lost many advanced military weapons. The last remaining continental army troops were driven from South Carolina consequent to the later May 29th battle of Waxhass. |
Battle of Cowpens – January 1781
It was a decisive battle of the Southern campaign. American forces were led by Daniel Morgan and defeated the British. It was fought in Cherokee County, in South Carolina. It was a turning point in the re-conquest of South Carolina from the British. Americans were out-numbered and yet still managed to send a final charge to victory. |
Battle of Yorktown – October 1781
The battle was fought in Virginia and was a decisive victory by a combined force of American Continental army troops led by General George Washington and French Army troops. The French troops were led by the Comte de Rochambeau. This siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary war. The surrender of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis, and the capture of both him and his army, prompted the British Government to negotiate an end to this conflict. This was the last and most important decisive Franco-American victory. |
