major battle summery
Battle of Eutaw Springs, 1781.
The battle of Eutaw Springs was begun on Saturday, September 8th 1781 in Orangeburg County.
Major general Nathaniel Greene’s first major objective was the capture of the British controlled
village of Ninety Six. Forces under Greene's command assaulted Ninety-Six on June 18, but were
repelled. To avoid facing the force commanded by Rawdon, Greene retreated toward Charlotte.
Colonel Stewart of the British, led a force of 2,000 men from Charleston's British garrison in search
of Greene's army. The force camped at Eutaw Springs, about 10 kilometers east of present-day
Eutawville, then in Charleston. The British casualty return stated the loss as 85 killed, 351 wounded
and 257 missing. As for the Americans, losses were 119 killed, 382 wounded, and 16 captured Englishmen.
The outcome were very close because although the British had a very tactical victory, the Americans
also gained a newly strategically advantage. Because of this, it his highly debated on the true victor of this battle.
