Lasting Symbol
This "Betsy Ross" flag was made during the duration of the American Revolution. It features thirteen stars to represent the original thirteen colonies. Its destinctive feature is the cicular arrangement of the colonial stars. Historians and experts discredit the common theory that the stripes and five-pointed stars derived from the Washington Family Coat of Arms. Stars were a device representing man's desire to achieve greatness. This is very similar to a late 1765 Sons of Liberty flag, which was flown in Boston had nine red and white stripes. It is possible that the circular star configuration was related and inspired by a halo painting by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo called "The Immaculate Conception", dated around 1767 to 1769. This flag was a symbolic image connected to the American Revolution and was sometimes considered the first official american flag.
